The Mahavidya refers to a group of ten powerful goddesses in Hinduism, all considered aspects of Shakti, the Divine Mother. The name "Mahavidya" means "Great Knowledge" (Maha – great, Vidya – knowledge), and these goddesses are called the Wisdom Goddesses. Each of them represents a different aspect of feminine divinity, ranging from fierce and protective to beautiful and gentle.
The Dasha Mahavidya Yantra (a mystical diagram) is believed to provide complete protection from various dangers like accidents, black magic, and negative planetary influences. It is also said to remove poverty and bring wealth and prosperity.
The Ten Mahavidyas include:
- Kali
- Tara
- Tripura Sundari
- Bhuvaneshvari
- Chinnamasta
- Tripura Bhairavi
- Dhumavati
- Bagalamukhi
- Matangi
- Kamala
These goddesses show different qualities, from fierce aggression to divine beauty. Each form of the Divine Mother appeared in different times and situations, eventually merging back into Uma, the wife of Lord Shiva.
Worshiping the Dasha Mahavidya grants both bhoga (material wealth) and moksha (spiritual liberation). The worship of these ten goddesses is particularly popular during Navratri, a Hindu festival. Many ancient texts like the Durga Saptashati, Kalika Purana, and Markandeya Purana contain stories explaining the origins of the Dasha mahavidya and their divine roles.
